The energy transition minister highlighted “Morocco’s first access to the international gas market”. She said the results of the restricted tender will be known “in a few days”.

Morocco is examining the responses received to a restricted tender for the supply of natural gas, announced Leila Benali, Minister for Energy Transition and Sustainable Development.

In a conversation with journalists this Friday, April 15, she said that this tender and the resulting supply contracts will allow the restart of the two combined cycle power plants Tahaddart and Béni Mathar, which are at the station today. This restart will have a positive impact on the finances of the National Agency for Electricity and Potable Water (ONEE) by improving financial projections for 2022.

The gas transit issue has been settled in talks with Spain, France and Portugal, added Leila Benali. These three countries are therefore likely to be the transit and processing countries for the natural gas before it is sent to Morocco. It is possible that the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline will be used in reverse to import gas through Morocco.

A commission made up of ONEE, the National Hydrocarbons and Mines Office (ONHYM) and the Ministry for Energy Transition examines the ten offers received. The decision should be announced in a few days, the minister promised. These are medium and long-term contracts. However, the amounts were not given.
