Of course, a wood fire has its charm, but once you have tasted natural gas for heating, you can no longer do without it! In fact, with a simple push of a button, the fire ignites, the heat radiates and well-being sets in immediately… All for a chosen duration and temperature… We want more!

Anyone who still doubts the usefulness of a gas fireplace often refers to the artificial aspect of such a device… However, the time when gas fires lacked naturalness is finally over! Nowadays, gas stoves and inserts actually play the flames with wood, sticks, pebbles, broken glass or steel, depending on your taste and desire. The result is decorative, authentic, outstanding… A must!
An addition to the existing system
Most of the time, the gas stove or insert is used as a secondary heater alongside a traditional system. The stove allows to bring a very pleasant direct heat and contemplate the play of the flames. In addition, these models are very easy to use (much more than a wood-burning fireplace, since there is no space to store the logs, no smoke is produced and you do not have to sweep the chimney…). Plus, there’s now a remote control to effectively regulate the temperature throughout the day. And with home automation sweeping the market, this regulation can also be done remotely via a smartphone or tablet. These fireplaces can also be coupled with a thermostat to regulate the temperature.
A safe evacuation
Generally, ventilation is via a concentric duct connected to the outside through the roof or facade. An existing chimney flue can also be used to lead through this socket. However, the location of the hearth is directly related to the gas inlets and the possibilities of air extraction. For a successful installation it is therefore essential to call in a professional: he is the only one qualified to correctly size and install the device, taking into account the position of the duct, the volume of the room and the weight of the chimney . It is also necessary to ensure that the floor, walls and ceiling can support such an installation. Only a professional can reliably perform such calculations.
It should also be noted that most gas inserts and stoves are Type C appliances, meaning they draw the air necessary for combustion from outside the building so as not to disrupt the home’s ventilation.
Gas fireplaces can be found in many different settings. They can either be embedded in the interior design (fireplace) or in an existing fireplace, unlike the gas stove which is a decorative element in its own right. The glass inserts on three sides offer an optimal view of the fire. The filling depends on your preferences and style (logs, pebbles, glass bottom, black steel, cast iron…). Finally, there are different types of “wood fire effect” windows and burners that you will study with the professional of your choice.
Open or closed?
There are open or closed models, but the second option is much more popular than the first. It is true that it is six to seven times more efficient with the door closed (which applies to gas as well as to wood). An observation that counts at a time when energy is becoming more and more precious!
